In short
Unplug the treadmill, remove the safety key and fold and lock it if it folds. For short moves on a flat floor, tilt it onto its transport wheels and roll it slowly. For stairs, car journeys or anything heavy, use two people, carry it flat or on its side as the manual allows, and protect the floor and walls. Never carry it by the console or handrail.

Treadmills and walking pads are heavy, awkward shapes, and moving them is where most dents, scratched floors and strained backs happen. A walking pad might weigh 15 to 30 kg; a folding treadmill can weigh much more. The good news is that most are designed with transport wheels and locking folds, and a little preparation makes moving them much easier. This guide covers short moves around a room, moving between rooms and floors, and transporting a treadmill to a new home.
Before you move it
Check the weight in the manual or on the listing, and look at how the maker says it should be moved. Some pads should only be carried flat; others can stand on their side. Clear the route, measure doorways and stair turns, and protect floors with a blanket or board if you will roll it.
Our article on treadmill dimensions and weight gives typical figures for walking pads and folding treadmills.
- 1
Stop the belt, switch off and unplug at the wall.
- 2
Remove the safety key and the remote, and tie up the power lead.
- 3
Fold the machine and engage the locking pin or latch, if it folds.
- 4
Lower any powered incline to zero before folding, if the manual says so.
- 5
Remove loose items such as tablet holders or bottles.
Note:Use two people for any treadmill you cannot comfortably lift alone, and always for stairs. Lift with your legs, not your back, and keep fingers clear of hinges and folding points.
Short moves on a flat floor
Most walking pads and folding treadmills have transport wheels at the front. Stand at the rear, lift the back end until the weight rests on the wheels, then roll slowly. On folding treadmills, the folded deck usually tips back onto front wheels. Go gently over thresholds and rugs, which can catch the wheels.
Walking pads can usually be slid flat under a sofa or bed after use. Lift slightly rather than dragging the rubber feet across wood or laminate. If you move a pad every day, our storage guide has tips.
Moving a treadmill up or down stairs
Stairs are where most damage and injuries happen. Use two people: one at the top end taking the weight and one at the bottom guiding. Carry the treadmill in the position the manual allows, usually folded and locked. Take one step at a time and stop on landings.
Never carry a treadmill by its console, handrail or plastic covers. Hold the frame. If the machine is too heavy for two people, or the stairs are steep and narrow, use a removal company with experience of gym equipment.
| Type | Usual method | People needed |
|---|---|---|
| Flat walking pad | Carry flat or tilt onto front wheels | One for short moves, two for stairs |
| Folding walking pad | Fold, lock, roll or carry | One or two |
| Folding treadmill | Fold, lock, roll on wheels; carry on stairs | Two |
| Non-folding treadmill | Partial disassembly may be needed | Two or a removal firm |
Moving house with a treadmill
If you still have the original box, use it. Otherwise wrap the machine in blankets, protect the console with bubble wrap and secure the fold. Transport it flat or as the manual says, strapped so it cannot slide. Bag any screws you remove and tape them to the frame.
After the move, let the machine come to room temperature, then check the belt is centred and tensioned before use. See how to adjust a treadmill belt and how to set up a new treadmill.
Choosing a treadmill that is easier to move
If you will move your treadmill often, weight and wheels matter more than features. Flat walking pads are the lightest; folding treadmills with good wheels are manageable for short rolls. Compare folded sizes and weights in our folding treadmill guide and our walking pad guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do you move a folding treadmill? Unplug, fold and lock it, then tilt it onto its front transport wheels and roll it. Use two people for stairs.
Can one person move a treadmill? A walking pad, often yes, for short moves. A folding treadmill is usually a two-person job, especially on stairs.
Can I carry a treadmill on its side? Some makers allow it; others do not. Check the manual, as it can strain the frame or let lubricant run.
Do I need to recheck anything after moving? Yes. Check belt tracking and tension, and any bolts that may have loosened.
