In short
A walking pad is typically about 120 to 145 cm long, 50 to 65 cm wide and 12 to 18 cm high, weighing around 20 to 35 kg. Folding treadmills are usually about 160 to 180 cm long and 70 to 85 cm wide, weighing roughly 40 to 80 kg. Full running treadmills can exceed 190 cm long and 100 kg. Always check the exact listing.

Before you choose a treadmill, it helps to know whether it will fit through the door, up the stairs and into the space you have in mind. Sizes vary a lot between walking pads, folding treadmills and full running machines, and listings do not always make it clear whether a figure is the belt, the deck or the whole frame. This guide gives typical dimensions and weights for each type, explains folded sizes and covers the practical questions about doorways, stairs and floors. Use it to narrow down your shortlist, then confirm the figures on the listing for any model you are considering.
Typical sizes and weights by type
These are broad ranges for machines sold for UK homes. Individual models fall outside them, so treat the table as a starting point.
| Type | Size in use | Machine weight |
|---|---|---|
| Walking pad | About 120 to 145 x 50 to 65 x 12 to 18 cm | About 20 to 35 kg |
| 2-in-1 pad with handrail | Similar deck, rail up to about 100 to 110 cm high | About 25 to 40 kg |
| Folding treadmill | About 160 to 180 x 70 to 85 x 120 to 140 cm | About 40 to 80 kg |
| Running treadmill | About 180 to 210 x 80 to 95 x 140 to 160 cm | Often 90 kg or more |
Width: how wide is a treadmill?
The overall width is the belt width plus the side rails, motor housing and any handrails. A walking pad with a 40 cm belt is often 50 to 60 cm wide overall. Folding treadmills tend to be about 70 to 85 cm, and full running treadmills can reach 90 cm or more.
Leave space either side as well. Many manuals ask for clear space at the sides and about 2 m behind the machine, so a person who stumbles is not pushed against a wall or furniture.
Folded sizes
Folding changes the footprint in different ways depending on the design. Some walking pads fold in half to about 70 to 80 cm long. Others stay flat and slide under a sofa or bed, so the height matters more than the length. Folding treadmills usually lift the deck upright against the console, reducing the floor area but increasing the height.
Measure the height under your furniture before choosing a pad to store flat, and the ceiling clearance where you will stand a folded treadmill. Our guide on how to fold a treadmill covers safe folding, and folding vs non-folding treadmill weighs up the trade-offs.
Doorways, stairs and delivery
Standard UK internal doors are often around 76 cm wide, with the clear opening narrower once the door and frame are allowed for. Most walking pads and boxed folding treadmills pass through on their side, but full running treadmills can be tight. Check the boxed dimensions on the listing as well as the assembled size.
Weight is the bigger issue on stairs. A 25 kg walking pad is a manageable lift for two people. A 70 kg folding treadmill in its box needs care, and a 100 kg running treadmill may need to be assembled in the room. Most pads and treadmills have front transport wheels for moving them on the flat once assembled.
- 1
Measure every doorway and turn on the route to the room.
- 2
Compare those with the boxed size, not just the assembled size.
- 3
Check the boxed weight and arrange help for stairs.
- 4
Measure the space for use, including the clearance behind.
- 5
Measure the storage space, including height under furniture.
Note:Treadmills are heavy. Lift with two people where the weight calls for it and follow the maker's guidance on moving and assembly.
Floors and floor loading
Normal domestic floors are designed to carry furniture, people and appliances, and a home treadmill in use is within what an ordinary sound floor is built for. Footfall causes more practical problems than static weight: thumps through suspended timber floors and dents in soft flooring. A dense mat spreads the load and protects the floor; see do you need a treadmill mat.
If you have doubts about an old or damaged floor, ask a builder or surveyor. For upstairs rooms and flats, our quiet walking pads guide focuses on lighter, quieter machines.
