In short
Unbox the machine with two people, check every part against the manual, and fit any uprights or handrails it needs. Place it on a firm, level surface near a wall socket with clear space behind. Check the belt is centred and the deck is lubricated if the manual asks for it, fit the safety key and do a short, slow first walk to check everything runs smoothly.

Many walking pads and some folding treadmills are sold as arriving assembled, and that is mostly true: the deck, motor and belt are ready. You may still need to fit uprights, a console or a handrail, and there are a few checks worth doing before the first walk. Getting set-up right avoids early noise, belt drift and wear. This guide covers unboxing, assembly, placement and first use. Always follow your own manual where it differs.
Unboxing and checking the parts
Walking pads often weigh 15 to 30 kg and folding treadmills considerably more, so unbox with two people and lift with your legs. Open the box where the machine will live if possible, to avoid carrying it twice. Keep the packaging for a few weeks in case you need to return it.
Lay out every part and check it against the parts list in the manual: remote, safety key, power lead, Allen keys, lubricant and any bolts for uprights. Note the model and serial number for warranty registration.
Note:Two people should lift any treadmill. Keep children and pets away from the area while you unpack and assemble.
What assembly is usually needed
Flat walking pads typically need no assembly at all. The Urevo SpaceWalk Lite listing, for example, states that no assembly is required. 2-in-1 pads may need the handrail lifting and locking. Folding treadmills marked as arriving assembled may still need uprights bolting to the base or a console connecting; the TREAFLOW pad listing states it arrives fully assembled and folds for storage.
Where you do fit uprights, connect any console cable carefully without pinching it, then tighten bolts evenly. Do not overtighten into plastic.
| Type | Usual assembly | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat walking pad | None | Remote pairing, safety key |
| 2-in-1 pad with rail | Raise and lock the rail | Locking knobs fully tight |
| Folding treadmill | Sometimes uprights and console | Console cable not pinched |
| Full running treadmill | Uprights, console, arms | Bolts tightened evenly |
Where to put it
Choose a firm, level floor. On carpet, use a firm mat to stop the pad sinking and to keep fluff out of the motor area. Leave clear space behind the belt; makers commonly specify around two metres behind and some space either side, so check your manual. Keep it near a wall socket so the lead does not cross a walkway. See can you plug a treadmill into an extension lead and do you need a treadmill mat.
For desk use, line the pad up with your standing desk and check the desk height with you standing on the deck. Our standing desk set-up guide shows how.
Belt and lubricant checks before the first walk
Look at the belt: it should be centred with an even gap at each side. Some makers pre-lubricate the deck; others supply silicone and ask you to apply it before first use. Follow the manual. If you need to apply it, our lubrication guide shows how.
- 1
Plug directly into a wall socket and switch on.
- 2
Fit the safety key or clip and attach it to your clothing.
- 3
Pair the remote or app if needed.
- 4
Start at the lowest speed with nobody on the belt and watch it run for a minute.
- 5
Step on from the side rails or frame, not onto a moving belt from behind.
- 6
Walk slowly for a few minutes, listening for rubbing or knocking.
- 7
Stop and check the belt is still centred.
After the first week
New belts can stretch slightly in the first few hours of use. Check tracking and tension after the first week and adjust in small, equal quarter turns if needed; see how to adjust a treadmill belt. Re-check any bolts you fitted during assembly.
If you have not bought yet and want minimal set-up, look for listings that state no assembly. Our walking pad guide and folding treadmill guide note this where the listing gives it.
Frequently asked questions
Do walking pads come assembled? Most flat walking pads do. 2-in-1 pads may need the handrail raising, and some folding treadmills need uprights fitting.
Do I need to lubricate a walking pad before first use? Some makers ask you to, others pre-lubricate. Follow the manual.
How long does it take to set up a treadmill? A walking pad is usually ready in minutes. A treadmill with uprights and a console takes longer; the manual lists the steps.
Why is my new treadmill belt drifting? New belts can settle. Re-centre with small, equal turns of the rear bolts.
