Incline converter
Treadmills state incline in %, maps and hills often use degrees. Enter either, plus a distance if you like, to see the height you climb.
In short
Grade % = rise ÷ run x 100. Degrees: θ = atan(% ÷ 100); % = tan(θ) x 100. Height climbed = distance along the belt x sin θ. So 10 % = 5.7 degrees, and 3 km at 10 % climbs about 299 m (980 ft).
Convert
10.0 % = 5.7 degrees
Height climbed over 3 km: 299 m (979 ft)
Degrees = atan(% ÷ 100); height = distance along the belt x sin of the angle. Some consoles label incline as levels rather than %: check the manual before converting.
Common inclines
Grade % is the rise divided by the run, times 100. Many walking pads offer a fixed 3 to 5 %, running treadmills often 12 or 15 %. Consoles may show levels instead of %, so check the manual.
