A treadmill or walking pad that shows no sign of life is frustrating, but the cause is often outside the machine. A tripped socket, a blown fuse in the plug or a power switch left off accounts for many cases. This guide takes you through the checks that are safe to do at home, in the order that finds the most common faults fastest. It does not cover opening the motor cover or testing internal parts, which should be left to the maker or a qualified technician.

Step 1: check the socket and lead

Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same wall socket. If it does not work, check your consumer unit for a tripped circuit breaker or RCD, and reset it if it has tripped. If it trips again when the treadmill is plugged in, stop and get the machine checked.

Most treadmill makers ask you to plug directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead or adaptor. If you have been using an extension, try the wall socket directly. Our article on extension leads explains why. Also check the lead is pushed fully into the treadmill's power inlet, which can work loose when a pad is moved.

Step 2: the fuse in the UK plug

UK plugs contain a cartridge fuse. If it has blown, the treadmill gets no power even though the socket is fine. With the plug removed from the socket, open the fuse carrier and replace the fuse with one of the same rating, usually printed on the old fuse or stated in the manual. Many treadmills use a 13 A fuse, but check yours.

If a new fuse blows again straight away, there is a fault in the machine. Do not fit a higher-rated fuse. Contact the maker.

Note:Always unplug before opening a plug or checking the lead. If you see scorching, smell burning or the lead is damaged, do not use the treadmill until it has been checked by a qualified person.

Step 3: switches, reset buttons and the safety key

Many treadmills have a rocker power switch near the power inlet, often at the front under the motor cover area. Walking pads sometimes have one on the side. Make sure it is on. Some machines also have a small circuit breaker or overload reset button beside the switch; if it has popped out, press it back in once.

Many consoles stay dark, or show only a prompt, until the safety key or magnetic clip is in place. Push it fully home. If yours is missing, see treadmill safety key missing.

  1. 1

Confirm the wall socket works with another appliance.

  2. 2

Push the power lead fully into the treadmill.

  3. 3

Replace the plug fuse with one of the correct rating.

  4. 4

Turn the treadmill's own power switch on.

  5. 5

Press any overload or reset button once.

  6. 6

Seat the safety key or clip fully.

If the display lights but the belt will not start

That is a different fault. The treadmill has power, but something is stopping the motor. Common causes are a missing safety key, an error code, a remote that has lost pairing, or a belt that is too tight or too dry. See walking pad stopped working, walking pad error codes and walking pad remote not working.

If the display flickers, shows only part of its segments or freezes, read treadmill display not working.

When to call the maker

If the socket, fuse, switch and safety key are all fine and the display is still dark, the fault is inside: a power supply, control board or wiring. These are jobs for the maker's service team or a qualified technician, and opening the machine yourself may affect the warranty. Have the model number, serial number and purchase date ready.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my treadmill turn on? Most often a tripped socket circuit, a blown plug fuse, a power switch left off or a loose lead. Check those before suspecting the machine.

Is there a reset button on a treadmill? Many have an overload or circuit breaker button near the power inlet. Check the manual for its location.

Why does my walking pad not turn on after moving it? The power lead may have pulled partly out of the inlet, or the switch may have been knocked off.

Can I repair a treadmill power fault myself? Only the external checks in this guide. Internal electrical faults need the maker or a qualified technician.
