Dust, hair and fluff are the main enemies of a home treadmill. They collect on the belt, get pulled underneath onto the deck where they mix with the lubricant, and drift into the motor area through the vents. Regular cleaning keeps the belt running smoothly and helps the motor stay cool. It only takes a few minutes. This guide covers how to clean the belt, around the deck and the motor cover vents, what products to avoid, and a simple routine for walking pads and treadmills. Check your manual, as some makers give specific cleaning instructions.

What you need

  • A vacuum cleaner with a brush or crevice tool
  • Two soft, lint-free cloths
  • Plain water, or water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid
  • A dry towel

Note:Always switch off, unplug and remove the safety key before cleaning. Never spray liquid near the motor cover, display or plug, and do not remove the motor cover unless the manual says it is safe to do so.

How to clean the belt, step by step

  1. 1

Switch off, unplug and remove the safety key.

  2. 2

Vacuum the top of the belt and along both edges where it meets the frame.

  3. 3

Vacuum the floor or mat around and under the treadmill, as far as you can reach.

  4. 4

Wring out a cloth until it is just damp and wipe the belt surface from front to back.

  5. 5

Push the belt round by hand to reach the next section, keeping fingers away from the rollers, and repeat until you have cleaned the full loop.

  6. 6

Wipe the side rails, frame and remote with a damp cloth.

  7. 7

Dry everything with a towel and leave it for a while before use, so the belt is fully dry.

Around the motor cover

The motor sits at the front under a plastic cover, and it draws air through vents. Dust and fluff collect around these vents, especially on carpet. Vacuum the outside of the vents gently with a brush tool. Do not poke anything into them.

Some makers explain how to remove the motor cover for cleaning; others say only an engineer should. Follow the manual. If you do remove it, make sure the machine is unplugged, vacuum gently without touching the circuit board, and refit every screw. A mat under the pad helps keep carpet fibres out; see do you need a treadmill mat.

When cleaning is not enough

If the belt still squeaks, slips or judders after cleaning and lubricating, the cause may be tension, a worn belt or a roller. See treadmill belt slipping and walking pad making a noise. If the belt surface is worn smooth or cracked, a replacement belt may be needed; how long does a home treadmill last covers wear parts.

Frequently asked questions

What can I clean a treadmill belt with? A damp cloth with plain water, or a little mild washing-up liquid, followed by a clean damp wipe and drying.

Can I use antibacterial wipes on a treadmill? On rails and the console, many makers allow mild wipes. Avoid harsh chemicals on the belt and check the manual.

How do I clean under a walking pad belt? Vacuum the edges. Lifting the belt to clean the deck is usually done during lubrication, with the pad unplugged.

How often should I clean my walking pad? A quick vacuum weekly and a belt wipe monthly suit most home use.
