**In short:** If the whole machine is dead, it is a power problem: check the socket, plug fuse and power switch. If the belt runs but the display is blank, the pad may be in a sleep or display-off mode, or the console cable may be loose. A frozen display usually clears after switching off at the wall for a minute. Persistent faults need the maker.

The display on a treadmill or walking pad shows speed, time and distance, and on many models it also confirms that the machine has power and the safety key is in. When it goes blank, dims, shows missing segments or freezes, the cause can be anything from a simple setting to a loose connection. This guide sorts the symptoms and gives the checks that are safe to make at home, in order. For anything inside the motor cover, contact the maker.

## First, which symptom do you have

Look at what still works: the belt, the remote, the app or nothing at all. That tells you where to start.

| Symptom | Likely area | Start with |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Display dark, belt will not run | Power supply | Socket, fuse, switch |
| Display dark, belt runs from remote or app | Display setting or console cable | Sleep or display mode, cable |
| Display dim or flickering | Loose connection or power | Wall socket, cable, reset |
| Some segments missing | Display panel | Contact the maker |
| Frozen numbers | Control software | Power off at wall for a minute |
| Shows an error code | Fault detected | Look up the code in the manual |

Display symptoms and where to start

## When the whole treadmill is dead

If nothing lights and nothing moves, the display is not the problem. Work through the socket, the fuse in the UK plug, the treadmill's own power switch and any reset button, as set out in [treadmill won't turn on](https://deckandstride.co.uk/blog/treadmill-wont-turn-on). Make sure the safety key is fully seated, because some consoles stay dark without it.

## Blank display while the belt still runs

Some walking pads switch the display off after a period without input, or have a setting that dims or hides it. The remote may have a button that wakes the display. Check the manual for display or standby settings.

On treadmills with a separate console on the upright, a cable runs up one upright from the base to the console. If the treadmill has been folded, moved or assembled recently, that cable can be pinched or partly unplugged. With the machine unplugged, check that the visible connector at the base of the upright is pushed together. Do not open sealed covers.

On folding 2-in-1 pads the display is often in the front cover, and the cable can be stressed by repeated folding. If the display cuts out only when the rail is up or down, mention that to the maker.

## Frozen or flickering displays

A display that freezes on one set of numbers, or a pad that stops responding to buttons, often clears after a full power reset. Switch off at the pad, switch off at the wall and unplug for a minute, then plug in and switch on again.

Flickering can point to a loose connection, an unstable extension lead or a failing display. Plug straight into a wall socket and try again. If it continues, contact the maker.

1. Stop the belt and remove the safety key.
2. Switch off at the pad and at the wall, then unplug.
3. Wait about a minute.
4. Check the power lead is pushed fully into the inlet.
5. Plug into a wall socket, not an extension lead.
6. Switch on and refit the safety key.

Note: Unplug before checking any cable or connector. If you smell burning, see scorching or the fault keeps returning, stop using the machine and contact the maker.

## Error codes on the display

If the display is working but shows a code such as E01 or E07, the treadmill has detected a fault. Codes differ between makers, so check your manual. Our [walking pad error codes guide](https://deckandstride.co.uk/blog/walking-pad-error-codes) explains the common groups and what to check.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is my treadmill display not working?** If nothing works, it is power. If the belt runs but the display is blank, look at display or sleep settings and the console cable.

**How do I reset a treadmill display?** Switch off at the machine and at the wall, unplug for a minute and switch on again. Some models have a reset sequence in the manual.

**Can I still use the treadmill with a blank display?** It is better not to, because you cannot see speed or error messages. Use the app if your model has one, or wait for a repair.

**Is a display fault covered by the warranty?** Usually, if it is a manufacturing fault within the warranty period. Contact the maker with your model and serial numbers.
